Organic Skin Care and the US Market
The number of consumers adding organic skin care products to their shopping list in the United States is increasing rapidly. We are all becoming more aware of health hazards ranging from pesticide-residues in fruit and vegetables to hormones in meats and the addition of artificial sweeteners in almost everything else.
Over 100,000 tons of man-made chemicals are used in making so called 'natural' cosmetics each year. Around 75,000 chemicals might come in contact with our skin during a given year.
The following should help in understanding the importance of Organic Skin Care, particularly in the US where hundreds of thousands of skin care products are used every year.
What is organic?
Organic is a way in which plants are grown and processed; the term organic refers to standards ensuring that synthetic chemicals, pesticides, fertilizers, sewage sludge, or any genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are not used and that animal welfare and the environment are respected.
Natural vs Organic?
The terms "natural" and "organic" are different terms. The term NATURAL has a broader meaning. According to government labeling requirements, Natural means that an ingredient "has not been significantly altered from its original state, nor has anything been removed from it (with the exception of water), nor have other substances been added to it."
Some natural products may contain genetically modified organisms in addition to not being regulated or certified in anyway. They may be grown with synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers, and may contain other ingredients, which are synthetic or artificial.
But it is entirely different in the case of organic products. They are made with ingredients grown without any synthetic chemicals, sewage sludge or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Products only labeled "natural" often use synthetic preservatives and other un-natural ingredients, alongside plant ingredients, and get labeled natural with only a few ingredients actually being "natural".
How to find an Organic Product?
Many companies use the chemistry definition of "organic" - defined as a compound that contains a carbon atom to make 'natural' organic skin care products. Fortunately they have to mention components used in preparing the product. Reviewing the product labeling is the best way to ensure that a product and all of it's components are truly organinc.
Organic products are making their presence felt in the US. However it is up to us how we want to treat organic products and natural organic products to make sure we are finding true 'miracle' products. Be informed and save your skin.
