Natural Skin Care for Dry Skin
Dry skin is one of the most common problems in skin care. Here we explain to you what makes your skin dry and natural skin care for your dry skin.
Know about your skin
Your skin is made up of multiple layers. The top layer is called epidermis. It is primarily responsible for preventing water loss from the body as water in the skin helps keep it soft and flexible. A variety of oils in the skin help maintain normal hydration. Your skin also contains a number of substances that help draw in moisture from the air. The epidermis also acts a protective barrier that prevents foreign substances from the environment from entering your body. The epidermis is continually being shed and replaced with fresh and new skin.
What causes dry skin?
Dry skin most commonly occurs when the water content of the skin drops too low. When this happens, the normal shedding of the epidermis, which gets replaced with fresh and new skin, slows down resulting in skin looking and feeling dry and flaky. Hormonal changes, especially around menopause, can cause dryness. Factors such as high exposure to central heating, frequent use of harsh soaps and contact with household cleaners can also cause dry skin. Dry skin can also cause you to feel itchy, uncomfortable and irritated. You may also have tiny cracks that can allow the entry of bacteria and irritating or allergy-causing substances.
Natural skin care techniques to avoid dry skin
· Gentle cleansing with a mild soap-free cleanser is useful to avoid dry skin
· Frequent use of harsh soaps or household cleansers can make the skin lose oils and other substances needed to maintain hydration. So ensure you always protect your skin with gloves
· Humidity in the air generally drops drastically during the winter months. So it is advisable not to spend long periods of time in a centrally-heated room, and try using a humidifier
· Ensure you take sufficient water everyday. It is advisable to drink a minimum of eight glasses of water per day
· When you take your bath or shower use lukewarm water. Hot water dries out the skin. Its better to limit your time to fifteen minutes or less in the bath or shower. Don't bathe too frequently. It will remove the natural oils from the skin, thus causing dryness
· Avoid using harsh soaps because they dry the skin. It is better to use skin cleansers than soaps
· Deodorant soaps are often very harsh and drying. If you need them, limit their use to areas that develop an odor such as the armpits, genital area, and feet
· Avoid vigorous use of a washcloth in cleansing your body. When toweling dry, do not rub the skin. Blot or pat dry so there is still some moisture left on the skin
· Apply a moisturizer to the skin. The best time to do this is immediately after a bath or shower so that the moisturizer holds in the moisture from the shower. If you have severely dry skin, apply an oil to the still moist skin and then apply a moisturizing cream. Also apply the moisturizer at bedtime
· It is advisable that all areas that are exposed to the sun, such as the face, ears, hands, and back of the neck should have a moisturizer containing sun block or a sunscreen of SPF 15 or greater applied daily
· For laundry avoid using detergents. Also avoid using fabric softeners, especially in the dryer
· Keep irritating fabrics away from your skin. Don't wear clothing made of wool or other scratchy fabrics. Its better using cotton percale sheets on your bed
· Use a humidifier in your home during summer season. If sweating causes itching, change your activity and surroundings to minimize sweating. Work and sleep in a fairly constant temperature (68-75 F) and humidity (45-55%). Keep drinking plenty of water and other liquids to keep your skin moist from the inside too
